Darcy Birch
SEMH Mentor and Co-ordinator
"My passion for supporting students’ growth and development began through my years as a Teaching Assistant, through my role I gained valuable experience in helping teachers prepare engaging lessons and organising and preparing classrooms to create an optimal learning environment. I provided invaluable assistance to children who required extra support, ensuring needs were met, and resources were individually tailored. I have developed an in-depth understanding of SEMH needs and effective strategies to support young people facing these challenges. Through my use of the ‘Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire’ (SDQs), I have been able to develop a bespoke programme of support, effectively supporting students since September 2021. Through my current role, I have developed skills in planning, monitoring, recording, and evaluating, to tailor my sessions to the individual needs of each young person. To maintain progression within my work, I actively remain updated with the latest research and best practice within SEMH support, taking opportunities to participate in courses and conferences, which importantly, allow me to implement evidence-based strategies into my work. I feel students will not be able to work to their full potential if their SEMH is a barrier to their learning. My deep sense of empathy allows me to form meaningful and established relationships with the young people at RESET AP and their parents and carers. I am resilient and understand how to remain calm when faced with challenging situations. Importantly, I prioritise upholding a student-centeredapproach in which the well-being and safeguarding of the young people I work with are at the forefront of my priorities. I believe my dedication to this role can give our students the opportunity to thrive and feel confident, which will enable them to be successful throughout their young lives.
